Dr. Caroline Clark Rivera began teaching human anatomy and physiology while a graduate student in Old Dominion University’s Doctorate Program in Biology. After teaching a few semesters at Tidewater Community College, Caroline realized her calling and accepted a full-time teaching position at Tidewater Community College. After nearly 10 years teaching in a classroom, Caroline became an administrator in higher education serving as an academic dean and as a student services dean. Because of her commitment to and love of education, Caroline has continued to design and teach courses in biology and human anatomy and physiology for several community colleges and universities.
In addition to her academic training, Caroline is also a registered E-RYT200 yoga teacher; teaching asana for close to a decade and bringing to class the scientific principles of alignment and body awareness. She works locally developing and teaching human anatomy and physiology courses for 200-hour and 500-hour yoga teacher-training programs. A self-proclaimed “unnatural-scientist”, she de-mystifies complex matters of human physiology through uncomplicated examples using simple language. Caroline is able to break down complex ideas and theories into accessible bite-sized pieces thus making them accessible to anyone with a desire to learn. Caroline has worked with renowned teacher Ann Richardson Stevens (Co-Owner and CEO of Studio Bamboo Institute of Yoga) to develop content for teacher training aimed at helping individuals deal with chronic pain. Ann Richardson Stevens and Studio Bamboo Institute of Yoga are committed to making yoga accessible to everyone and this commitment is evident in the variety of classes offered and in their community outreach. Caroline is also enjoying work with Mindful Yoga Therapy (MYT) – developing and teaching content for MYT’s 100-hour, Veterans Training for Yoga Teachers program. This fabulous program gives yoga teachers the tools they need to safely, responsibly, and lovingly provide yoga to our brave Veterans who live everyday with PTSD. Caroline has developed content illustrating the impact of PTSD on the body (organ systems), mind (brain and meditation), and spirit (consciousness of trauma) through the incorporation of real-world examples and simple explanations of a complex and difficult illness to treat. |
Caroline’s unique background in traditional, laboratory science coupled with her knowledge of the subtle body allows her to offer yoga teachers-in-training a distinctive approach to understanding body kinetics and awareness.
In her continuous quest to make anatomy and physiology accessible to everyone, Caroline has developed e-learning modules that may serve as a supplement for any 200-hour or 500-hour yoga teacher-training program.
Dr. Caroline Clark Rivera is a proud, community college success story – a high school dropout who went on to beat the odds. Caroline has a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Master’s degree in Anthropology, Master’s degree in Biology – ABD PhD, and a PhD in Community College Leadership.
